FAVORITE CF WORKOUT/TYPE OF WORKOUT:
It seems strange to feel this way, but I like lifting heavy things over long time periods. My favorite kind of workout is the kind – and there are very many of these in CrossFit – where before the timer starts you’re thinking – NO. Just no. It’s too heavy. That’s too long. Way too many reps. I don’t think I can do that…
And then you look the others in the eye, the timer starts, you take a deep breath, and BANG. It’s ON! Grunts. Sweat flying. A few non-family-friendly epithets. Hearing the weights BLAM on the floor. Music blaring.
And you’re done. The bodies collapse on the floor. You can barely can lift your fist to bump your box-mates’ fists.
That was terrible. I can’t believe I did that. THAT WAS AWESOME!
I started competitive swimming when I was nine, competed nationally, and was a Division I collegiate swimmer. And then I wasn’t anymore. I worked, had a family, “didn’t have time”, etc. etc. I became progressively fatter, weaker, and sicker, all while remembering that I was once an athlete. It’s good to be an athlete again!
WHY YOU DO CROSSFIT:
See above. I do CrossFit because nothing else (in my experience, and I’ve been around for a long while and tried many things) promotes this kind of strength, stamina, explosive power, balance, transferable skill, and health.
GREATEST CROSSFIT MEMORY/EXPERIENCE:
Oh, boy. There are so many. I’ll share a quick few, and these will be with me forever:
Realizing that not only are you keeping up with that Adonis Athlete you were so in awe of but that you’re also dear friends. I have so many beautiful people in my life because of the CrossFit community.
Being new and being the LAST ONE TO FINISH – and having everyone around me cheering and screaming and pushing me to the very last rep. I actually bought a shirt with “SON OF A @#&*$! LAST PLACE!” that I wore my first year. I have since bequeathed it to another deserving athlete. I’m done with it now…
Last one for now. TODAY. Today was a great day. I stood on a box and welcomed 50 people – many of whom have never done a CrossFit workout – to our box for a bring a friend day. I looked around the room and was overwhelmed with emotion…and then I set the timer, they all took a deep breath, and BANG! It was ON!

Hobbies/other non CF interests:
Most of my time beyond the box is spent contemplating/researching diffusion patterns in complex financial networks and doing my best to raise a family. I have too many dogs. I unwind by cooking for friends and family, typically accompanied by a martini and music. Martinis make me an excellent singer, by the way.
Beautiful and talented wife Michelle, my son Jonah, and daughters Samantha and Katie. Of the non-human variety, canines include Locke, Ozymandius, Kallie, and the one we call Hodor. He’s not very bright, but sure is nice. And a cat, whatever its name is. Ask Michelle.
