What do you do for a living?
Mary is an amazing stay-at-home mom and home school teacher. Randy is the director of the Catholic Life Center and youth activities director at St. Thomas Catholic Church.
What are your hobbies?
We love to travel, especially to Disney. We enjoy spending time in the outdoors (hunting, hiking, fishing, etc.). We love to hang out with our three beautiful daughters, family and friends. Randy is a published cigar reviewer and avid drummer. Mary is a classically trained singer and relaxes by reading and crafting.
What’s your favorite movement or WOD in CrossFit and why? Randy - Karen is my favorite WOD. It hurts like hell but it’s an awesome way to test your mettle. Mary - Deadlift is my movement of choice. I really, really enjoy WOD’s that have zero burpees in them.
What’s your athletic background?
Randy - I played baseball from age 7-16 and played football for a short time as well. I was a weightlifter during my teens and have been a sporadic gym attendee through the years but never committed to long term fitness/nutrition until starting CrossFit. Mary - I played volleyball and soft ball during my teen years but, like Randy, really never gave fitness or nutrition priority until starting CrossFit.
What motivates you to come to the gym every day?
Randy & Mary - Heart disease and diabetes are common in our families. Mary’s father died at age 60 of chronic heart disease after having a heart transplant when he was just 57 years old. Knowing our family history with heart disease and diabetes, we both wanted to be the best role models we could be for our kids. We want to give them a better start in life by encouraging fitness and clean eating, hopefully, preventing chronic disease in our family for good.
What have you learned about yourself by doing CrossFit?
Randy - I’ve learned that I don’t want to ever go back to my old, sedentary lifestyle so I can spend more quality time with my girls. I do CrossFit for them as much as I do it for myself. We have both learned we thoroughly enjoy the new family we’ve become a part of. The feeling of community is second to none. Mary - I’ve learned I am stronger and more capable than I ever imagined. I’ve learned that when I think I want to quit, I can tell myself to keep moving and ignore the pain. I’ve learned I am fighter, in charge of my body. Most importantly, I have seen the way that what I do as a woman has challenged my little women to become interested in health, fitness and nutrition. That’s honestly the best part of it all.
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in your lifestyle since doing CrossFit?
Randy - I slowly lost about 20 pounds until starting CrossFit. Since starting, I’ve lost nearly 40 additional pounds. I am starting to see muscle definition and have more endurance than I ever thought possible. I am in the best shape of my life. We owe a million thanks to Bill and Michelle McCumber for challenging us to give this a shot. Your friendship, persistence and constant encouragement has helped change our lives and for this, we are eternally grateful. Mary - For the first time in my life I have a desire to be healthy and not eat junk. I see the importance of an active lifestyle and clean eating. I’ve lost about 40 pounds since June. I see muscles that I didn’t know I had and my energy and cardio are probably the best they have ever been. I look forward to the changes I’ll continue to see in my body as my CrossFit journey goes on. I have found an active and healthy lifestyle that I can, and will, maintain. I’m so thankful for the family I have found at Catahoula CrossFit; you’ve changed my life for the better.
